Mothering the mother
Honoring the Sacred Fourth Trimester
The postpartum period — often called the Fourth Trimester — is one of the most tender and transformative seasons in a woman’s life. Across cultures and throughout history, this time has been recognized as sacred.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is believed that how a mother is cared for in her first 40 days after birth can influence her health for the next 40 years. This wisdom speaks to the profound importance of this window — a time of rest, healing, replenishment, and renewal. When a mother is truly supported, she is given the space not only to recover, but to emerge strong, grounded, and deeply nourished.
While many of us were not born into communities that uphold these traditions, this kind of care remains our birthright. The wisdom of our ancestors still lives within us. When we rekindle these practices — with intention and love — we don’t just restore the mother’s body and spirit, we ripple healing forward for generations.
I truly believe that if we can mother the mother, we can change the world.
When mothers are nourished, families are nourished.
When families are nourished, communities thrive.
And when communities thrive, life flourishes.
The Five Essentials of the Postpartum Season:
1. An Extended Period of Rest
For 40 weeks, a woman’s body gradually transforms to grow and hold new life. After birth, rest is not indulgent — it is biological wisdom.
Yet so many women feel pressure to resume “doing it all” far too quickly. True postpartum care protects the mother from this urgency. It creates a container where her only responsibility is to heal, bond, and soften into her new rhythm.
Rest allows the body to recalibrate, the hormones to regulate, and the nervous system to settle. It is foundational.
2. Deep, Nutrient-Dense Nourishment
During pregnancy and postpartum, the body instinctively prioritizes the baby’s nourishment — often at the expense of the mother’s reserves. This can leave her depleted physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Intentional postpartum care ensures the mother is fed first — with warm, grounding, nutrient-dense foods that rebuild blood, restore minerals, and strengthen vitality. This is not about convenience; it is about replenishment. Traditional foods prepared with care become medicine during this time.
3. Warming & Restorative Treatments
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is said that after birth a woman’s body can feel like a house with all the windows open. Warmth becomes essential.
Warming therapies — such as moxibustion, warm herbal oils, vaginal steaming, castor oil packs, and warm foods and drinks — gently restore circulation and vitality to the pelvic organs. These treatments support healing from the inside out and help the mother feel contained, held, and whole again.
4. Intentional Bodywork
The right bodywork can profoundly support recovery and integration after birth.
Practices such as belly binding, abdominal and uterine massage help guide the uterus back into alignment and support the lymphatic system. Warm oil massage and craniosacral therapy can soothe the nervous system and gently shift the body out of stress patterns that birth can imprint.
This work is not a luxury. It is restorative medicine for a body that has accomplished something extraordinary.
5. Community & Loving Support
Western culture often celebrates independence, yet postpartum calls for interdependence.
Isolation, overwhelm, and uncertainty are far too common in this season. When a mother is surrounded by knowledgeable, loving care, these feelings soften. She is reminded she does not have to carry this alone.
Community during postpartum is as essential as water and nourishing food. It steadies the mother, strengthens the family, and honors the sacredness of this transition.

My Approach:
I focus on the mother–baby dyad, centering the mother so she can be deeply held, nourished, and supported in her healing during the first forty days.
This approach allows for a softer entry into the postpartum period—and a more grounded, fully integrated transition out of it.
My goal is to help mothers restore their vitality while developing a deep understanding of their physiologic and psychological needs throughout the childbearing continuum.
I typically begin working with families in the third trimester to create a postpartum plan, followed by 1–2 visits per week during the first 40 days postpartum.
Best Fit For:
Families seeking mother-centered, holistic postpartum care
Those drawn to traditional and physiologic healing practices
Families who value hands-on, intimate support over household assistance
Women desiring personalized care beyond the standard 6-week postpartum model
Those looking to build a sustainable framework for long-term healing
